MATARÓ GIANTS
The Gegants of Mataró are one of the city’s oldest and most beloved traditions. First documented in the 17th century, these giants have become a cultural and festive symbol, starring in the celebrations of Mataró’s Festa Major, Les Santes.
The Robafaves family leads this iconic comparsa, consisting of Robafaves, his inseparable Geganta, their daughter Toneta, and her husband, Maneló. These characters are true ambassadors of Mataró’s culture, delighting young and old with their grandeur and dances.
Additionally, the Nans of Mataró, a group currently made up of 18 cabezudos (big-headed figures), accompany the Robafaves family, bringing energy and fun to every celebration with their races and dances, especially designed for the youngest.
The ensemble is completed by Mataró’s bestiary, featuring iconic figures such as the Eagle, the Dragon, the Dragalió, the Momerota, and the Momeroteta. Each of these figures holds a special meaning for the people of Mataró, representing the city’s rich cultural and festive heritage.
These figures are much more than festive elements; they are a living reflection of Mataró’s history and tradition, connecting generations and filling the streets with culture and joy year after year.
