MOMEROTA, GIANT OF MATARÓ
On July 25th, 1979, the Momerota de Mataró was officially presented, as a result of the popular initiative to recover and renew the festive heritage of Mataró's Main Festival, "Les Santes". But it was not until 1981 that the figure, carriers, and musicians were recognized by the local authority and became part of the city's heritage.
Momerota was built by actor Boris Ruiz and is a figure of fire carried by two people, with an ox's head crowned by two horns of six points of fire and body of "mulassa".
The Momerota Gang of Mataró is formed by about forty carriers. The wearers are dressed in a wide dressing gown of shirts, girdle, black trousers, traditional esparto espadrilles and a black beret on the head.
Momerota dances a choreography by Montse Calsapeu and moves accompanied by the sound of the "gralles" and "tabals" of some twenty musicians.
The dance consists of a succession of jumps, small and half-turns, displacements and "culetades" that finish with progressively accelerated circular movements.
